The Department of Film, Video, Animation & New Genres at UWM’s Peck School of the Arts welcomes young filmmakers to develop their skills at a week-long day camp this summer! Choose from two comprehensive experiences: film camp (with optional overnight accommodations) and advanced film camp. Both camps include hands-on workshops and sessions led by practicing artists and professors, so participants gain knowledge from experienced professionals.

Film Summer Camp | June 24–28

Housing & Accommodations
Coming from out of town or want to enrich your UW-Milwaukee experience? Overnight accommodations with evening activities are available by registering for the overnight program. On-campus housing includes a shared double bedroom, bathroom and kitchen as part of a four-bedroom suite. Includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, Wifi, air conditioning, linens, shuttle service to program, evening activities and 24-hour secure staffing. Check-in is Sunday, June 23 and check-out is Friday, June 28.

Workshops & Sessions

  • Storytelling & Screenwriting
    Learn how to navigate an idea, structure a story and format a treatment and screenplay. Develop ideas that you will shoot and edit during the week with fellow film camp students.
  • Cinematography & Lighting
    Learn basic techniques of camera operation, exposure control and visual design. Practice professional lighting in our lighting studio and greenscreen studio as well as on-location lighting set-ups. Light and shoot your ideas from your screenplay or treatment!
  • Directing & Acting
    Study the art of guiding actors and gain insight on performance with introductory directing and acting exercises.
  • Editing & Postproduction
    Use your footage to learn basic editing techniques with Adobe Premiere Pro in one of our editing labs. Edit your footage into a short project or reel that you can take with you!
  • Film Score Theory & Design or Animation Techniques
    These are optional workshops available during open editing lab.

Advanced Film Summer Camp | July 22–26

This camp is ideal for advanced filmmakers who have already attended our Summer Film Camp. However, students of all levels and experience are welcome to join, especially those who might have experience in basic filmmaking and are looking to learn new methods and techniques. During the week you’ll explore various elements of filmmaking through hands-on demonstrations and workshops to learn advanced filmmaking skills. Each day covers a different element of production where participants learn from a UWM instructor who professionally practices in these areas of specialty.

Workshops & Sessions

  • 16mm Filmmaking Production
    Learn how to film 16mm film with a Sekonic Light Meter and Bolex Camera with black and white reversal filmstock. Create with handmade 16mm film techniques including scratch films, coloring and manipulating filmstock. 16mm film clips will be developed and digitized, so everyone can keep a copy of the creations. 
  • Foley Sound Recording & Mixing
    Learn Foley sound recording techniques and audio mixing skills. Create and edit audio sound effects. Use unexpected materials to record sound effects that you can manipulate with editing software and take the audio files home with you for use in future film projects. 
  • Advanced Camera
    Explore working with the Blackmagic URSA Mini with a hands-on workshop and lighting set-up in our lighting studio. Design dynamic lighting set-ups and create moods by painting with light. 
  • Art Design
    Learn techniques of production design by exploring the importance of set, props, costuming, and the art of designing a scene. Create a handmade prop, set design map or costume component with easy-to-find materials and supplies.  
  • Master Class Series
    Learn about non-fiction storytelling, indie film production, and tricks of the trade from professional filmmakers and producers in a series of Master Class Sessions.
