Artists Now! Guest Lecture Series: Maggie Michael
November 8 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
“Wrestling control of her inherently fluid medium, Maggie Michael’s work can be seen as reckoning with painting’s dual nature, at once dynamic and still. Within individual works she achieves an exquisite tension between those states, but the arc of her career more generally can be seen as a back-and-forth between them. Beginning in 2002, Michael has pursued her work within the confines of discrete series, which follow a broad pattern that veers between (deceptive) simplicity and (controlled) complexity.” – Sarah Newman, Exhibition Curator for “A Phrase Hung in Midair As if Frozen,” Maggie Michael’s 2016 mid-career exhibition at American University.
