4 Days in France
November 5 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
32nd Annual Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival presents…
4 DAYS IN FRANCE
directed by Jérôme Reybaud
(France, in French with English subtitles, 141min., 2016)
“Writer-director Jérôme Reybaud has crafted an assured film for his narrative-feature debut. 4 Days in France has a strong vision, even as its protagonist simply wanders across France.”
– LA Times
Pierre (Pascal Cervo) walks out on his boyfriend Paul (Arthur Igual) to cruise the French countryside, using the gay networking app Grindr as both his guide and compass. Over the course of his travels and various hookups, Pierre discovers people who are similarly lonely, isolated, and desperate for fleeting intimacy. Meanwhile, Paul, using Grindr as a tracking device, sets out in pursuit of his wandering boyfriend.
Jérôme Reybaud’s queer road movie wastes little time on plot or even character: Little is known about Pierre and Paul outside of their immediate actions in the narrative. Reybaud instead devotes attention to the short-lived and often humorous interactions among his vibrant cast of characters, providing 4 Days in France with an expansive humanistic scope.
Though technology serves as an intermediary between Pierre and other characters, 4 Days in France is largely concerned with the loss of intimacy in an age of digital mediation. Through an incisive script and formal precision, the film explores the breakdown of interpersonal communication and the subsequent struggle to reconnect.
