The UWM Art Collection has received another gift of art from Virginia and J. Thomas Maher III. The Mahers, ardent collectors of modern art, donated an outstanding example of American Pop Art by the well-known artist, Larry Rivers. Rivers’ 1985, “Dutch Masters”, an acrylic relief on cast paper, represents a later treatment of a subject that the artist initially appropriated in 1963, the popular cigar box image referencing Rembrandt’s “Syndics of the Drapery Guild”
The UWM Art Collection is very fortunate to have benefitted by multiple donations from the Mahers personal art collection. Accompanying the art is a scholarly reference book about Larry Rivers. The donation will enhance the permanent collection and significantly advance its pedagogical mission.
