September 6, 2016  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, Colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

– Michael Zimmer, SOIS, has been awarded a National Science Foundation EAGER (EArly-concept Grant for Exploratory Research) grant to pursue collaborative research on “Mapping Privacy and Surveillance Dynamics in Emerging Mobile Ecosystems: Practices and Contexts in the Netherlands and US.” Congratulations, Michael!

The Week

Tuesday
It’s going to be a busy week with classes started and our students back on campus. I start the day with a deans morning meeting followed by the Chancellor’s weekly Cabinet meeting. In the afternoon I also have my weekly staff meeting (which normally follows the Cabinet meeting). I end the day with a meeting with Sara Tully and Aneesh Aneesh from the Center for International Education.

Wednesday
I have meetings with VC Robin Van Harpen and UC Chair John Reisel, and a strategic position control meeting focusing on Finance and Administrative Affairs and the Libraries. I’m also stopping by the Roberto Hernandez Center open house. In the afternoon the Academic Leadership Council meets. Agenda items include the 457 Fund (Brian Thompson); Integrated Support Services Project Leadership Team Presentation (Sylvia Banda); Course Revitalization (Diane Reddy); and a discussion on the Strategic Enrollment Management Plan Recommendations focusing specifically on an overview and implementation for Schools and Colleges (Laura Pedrick, Kyle Swanson & Seth Zlotocha).

Thursday
Another busy day: I’m attending the Academic Planning and Budget Committee meeting, an Integrated Shared Services sponsors meeting, and I have meetings with deans Tom Lipinski and Scott Emmons. I attend a meeting of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on LGBT+Advocacy and I’m doing the welcome for the Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership (WWHEL) fall gathering. I also have a campus budget planning meeting.

Friday
I have a phone meeting with the Education Advisory Board, a meeting with ASC Chair Rebecca Freer, and a strategic position control meeting. I’m also attending Second Friday (see below).

Announcements

Second Friday
The Helen Bader School of Social Welfare and the School of Education will host a “Second Friday” celebration on Friday, September 9 from 4-6 p.m. in the Golda Meir Library Fourth Floor Conference Center.

From the Office of Research
The Office of Research is offering an application workshop for the Research Growth Initiative (RGI) on Friday, September 9 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. in Mitchell 361. Registration is not required. The RGI is an internal funding program intended to support high-quality research projects and creative works in the early stages, and identify those with good potential for external funding.

From the Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research (CCBLLR)
– As part of UWM’s 60th anniversary celebration our campus will work to track 60,000 hours of community service this academic year. One of the opportunities we hope a few UWM departments will consider is to adopt one of the Hunger Task Force’s Fresh Picks Mobile Market sites. Mobile markets bring fruit, vegetables, and other perishables to neighborhoods with limited access to fresh food. Supported by a federal grant, items are sold to community members at 25% below regular retail prices. The Hunger Task Force and CCBLLR are looking for one or two campus departments who are willing to adopt some nearby sites (for example, the Clinton Rose Senior Center or the House of Peace, both less than 5 miles from campus). Once per month a department would have to provide 3-4 volunteers for about 2 hours (this includes travel time) to help at the site. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity contact Ben Trager at the CCBLLR office at bwtrager@uwm.edu.

– The Milwaukee Election Commission is hosting two training sessions in September on the UWM campus for individuals who would like to be deputized to register people to vote. The Higher Education Act asks campuses to engage in non-partisan voter registration of students, and the CCBLLR is coordinating a Voter Registration Committee to get people deputized on our campus so students can be a part of the political process during the election season. Sign up for one of the remaining SRD trainings.

From the Vet Success On Campus Program
The Veterans Affairs Regional will be honoring Vietnam Era Veterans affiliated with UWM at the Serving Those Who Served Veterans Week Brunch. All Vietnam Era Veteran employees of UWM are encouraged to contact Gretchen Schuttey, Gretchen.schuttey@va.gov, to participate.

For All Instructors
The Start of Semester Memo, which contains useful policy-related information, is available online.

From the Zilber School of Public Health
On Public Health kicks off the fall 2016 series with a lecture by Dr. Kate Foss on the history of Milwaukee water systems on Wednesday, September 15 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Zilber School of Public Health.

From the Center for International Education
– The CIE Study Abroad Office will be hosting its Study Abroad Fair on Thursday, September 8 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the UWM Golda Meir Library Overhang.

– CIE and the Office of Undergraduate Research will be awarding travel funding to faculty and academic staff to support overseas field research experiences for undergraduates. Faculty apply on behalf of the student(s) they wish to supervise (students do not apply directly). Applications are currently being accepted for overseas research projects planned for fall 2016, winterim 2017, spring 2017, and summer 2017. The due date for the current round of funding is September 28. See the Call for Applications.

From the Center for Information Policy Research
Please save the date for an upcoming CIPR Research Lunch with Professor Peter Lor as he presents, “Libraries Promoting Peace: Cherished Illusion or Opportunity for Action?” on Wednesday, September 7 from 12-1:30 p.m. in NWQ-B 3511. Bring your own lunch, with refreshments and light dessert provided by SOIS.

Have a good week!
