Dear Colleagues,

I share with you the sad news that Dr. Marilyn Miller, Emerita Professor of Psychology, passed away on January 15.

Dr. Miller’s career spanned 42 years at UWM.  She began teaching in the Department of Psychology in 1957, and was a highly regarded professor specializing in statistics, measurement and experimental design. During her time at UWM, she served several terms as Chair of the Department of Psychology, as well as on numerous committees. She also served, for more than a decade, as Secretary of the University.

Dr. Miller earned many awards and accolades as a memorable teacher and mentor to countless students. She spoke up for and worked tirelessly towards gender equity and balance within faculty ranks, and was also a strong mentor to many faculty across campus. Throughout her long career, she was an unwavering champion of academic and intellectual freedom, and a dedicated defender of faculty governance. She was an Ernest Spaights Plaza Awardee in 2007, years after her retirement from UWM.

Dr. Miller’s obituary is online.  Our condolences to Marilyn’s family and to the many others whose lives she touched.

Take care,

Johannes
