Dear Colleagues,

I share with you sad news from colleagues in the UWM Libraries.

Barbara Zakrzewska Borowiecki, Professor Emerita in the Department of Geography, passed away last month. Barbara was born in Warsaw, Poland. She began teaching in the Department of Geography at UWM in 1960, became Chair of the department in 1971, and retired from UWM in 1992.

Barbara was instrumental in UWM’s acquisition and transfer of the American Geographic Society (AGS) Map Collection to the Golda Meir Library. She was a dynamic believer in Polish studies and was an important force in the development of Polish, Russian, and East European Studies at UWM. She was also a dedicated promoter and initiator of the outstanding Polanki college scholarship program.

Read Barbara’s obituary. Our condolences to Dr. Borowiecki’s family and to the many others whose lives she touched.

Take care,
Johannes
