Dear Colleagues,

I share with you the sad news that Dr. Johanna Moore-Baxandall, a former Senior Lecturer in UWM’s German Department, passed away last week.

Dr. Moore-Baxandall was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1948. She received a teaching degree (B.S.) from Carroll College before relocating to Milwaukee, where she earned both her M.S. and Ph.D. in Education at UW-Milwaukee. She taught in the UWM German Department (now a part of the Foreign Languages and Literature Department) for more than 25 years before retiring. Her charismatic personality and outstanding teaching skills served to inspire and guide a generation of students, many of whom themselves became educators. She was also a skilled translator of both fiction and literary/social criticism, and served for many years as managing editor of New German Critique, an interdisciplinary journal of German studies.

Dr. Moore-Baxandall’s obituary is online. Our condolences to Johanna’s family and to the many others whose lives she touched.

Take care,

Johannes
