Dear Colleagues,

I share with you sad news from the Department of Geography.

Donn Haglund, Professor Emeritus and Lowell Thomas Award recipient, passed away on Wednesday, August 9. Dr. Haglund taught at UWM for more than 40 years and was known for his expertise in maritime transport to support Arctic economic development. He inspired countless students with his passion for the far North his dedication to preserving the Arctic Circle.

Dr. Haglund began teaching at the Wharton School at the age of 21 and earned his Ph.D. in Economic Geography from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a visiting Professor at the Universities of Alaska, Carleton, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Stockholm. He also lectured at Oxford and Cambridge, among other esteemed institutions, and was inducted into the prestigious Sigma Xi for his service to Science and Society.

Dr. Haglund served as President of the Wisconsin Geographic Society, Governor of the American Polar Society, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Arctic Institute of North America, and Vice President of Monaco’s Comité Arctique International under the Honorary Chairmanship of Prince Rainier.

Dr. Haglund was devoted to the Alaskan Iditarod Trail Dog Race. He was praised by leaders of the indigenous communities of the Polar region for his stance of solidarity and dedication to continued research and economic development. He was also a dedicated Eagle Scout for over 60 years.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 18 from 5 – 8 p.m. at Feerick Funeral Home located at 2025 East Capitol Drive in Shorewood. There will also be visitation at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 19 at United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 19 at United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay. There will be a luncheon following the service. Cards may be sent to:
