Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

– The BSN@Home degree is celebrating its 20-year anniversary and will be receiving the 2016 Celebration of Excellence Award for Mature Program from the University Professional and Continuing Education Association. The Mature Program award recognizes established credit or noncredit programs that have demonstrated sustained innovation. Congratulations!

In the News

– Mark Schwartz, Distinguished Professor in Geography, made the news again with his study on climate change.

– Erin Winkler, Africology, was also in the news for her work with the National Museum of African American History, the newest Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

– The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel featured a story on Jacarrie Carr, graduate student in Education, and his non-profit, Jacarrie’s Kicks for Kids.

Annual Benefits Enrollment – Starts this week

– The Annual Benefits Enrollment (ABE) Period runs from October 17 through November 11. As more information becomes available, please visit the Annual Benefits Enrollment website, as well as the UWM Benefits web page for updates. In conjunction with the ABE, UWM’s annual Benefits and Wellness Fair will be held on Wednesday, October 26 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Student Union Wisconsin Room. Benefits vendors, wellness program providers, and UWM Benefits staff will be in attendance to answer all of your questions. Contact the Benefits Office benefits@uwm.edu or 229-5353 if you need special accommodations during the Fair.

The Week

Monday
I have my standing meeting with VC Robin Van Harpen, the Academic Staff Committee, and the Chancellor’s Cabinet meeting. In the afternoon, I have my monthly meetings with VC Pat Borger and Jim Hill, a follow-up meeting on advising, and CEMAT meets. Agenda items include Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Update, Mind-Set Initiative, Center for International Education SEM Update, Academic Opportunity Center Update, CEMAT Scholarship Resources, and Status of UW System Financial Aid Funds.

Tuesday
I start the day with the Deans’ Morning Meeting, Campus Enrollment Retreat (see the agenda), and a site visit for the Zilber School’s accreditation with the Council on Education for Public Health. Later, I have standing meetings with VC Tom Luljak, Director of Legal Affairs Joely Urdan, and my weekly staff meeting.

Wednesday
I have a meeting with the Chancellor, deans, and executives from Direct Supply to discuss partnering opportunities, followed by several meetings with direct reports. In the afternoon, I meet with Stan Stojkovic and the Academic Leadership Council meets. Agenda items include 2016 outcomes and 2017 opportunities, UWM Online summer marketing results, and the Hispanic-serving Institution Initiative.

Thursday
I’ll attend the APBC meeting. I have standing meetings with Marija Gajdardziska-Josifovska and Paula Rhyner. Later, I have my weekly meeting with the Chancellor, followed by a campus space planning meeting, and a meeting with Rodney Swain. I’ll also attend the Faculty Senate meeting.

Friday
The Chancellor and I have our quarterly meeting with the senior leadership of the Medical College of Wisconsin. In the afternoon, I have the Chancellor’s Student Success Work Group and will accompany Sergeant Brian Switala on his bicycle beat.

Saturday
I’ll be a community judge at the 2016 Public Speaking Showcase.

From Comparative Ethnic Studies
Comparative Ethnic Studies is hosting an Open House tonight from 5-6:30 p.m. in Curtin 109! All are welcome to join us for snacks, socializing, and presentations from current CES students and alumnae.

Disability Awareness Month Film and Panel – Tuesday, October 18th
Screening of Right Footed and panel discussion takes place tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Union Fireside Lounge.

Support for Haiti
FICL and the students’ French club, CIE, and CLACS are holding a bake sale on Thursday, October 20 from 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium to support the community of Duchity in Haiti after the destructive passage of hurricane Matthew.

Math Celebrates 50 Years!
The Department of Mathematical Sciences celebrates 50 Years as a Doctoral Research Department with a series of events the weekend of October 21-23. The celebration kicks off with a Keulks Memorial Lecture, “On the Shape of Space,” by Dr. Jeffrey Weeks at 8 p.m. on Friday in the Union Ballroom. Talks by alumni in EMS and a panel on non-academic careers in the Zelazo center take place on Saturday.

On Friday at 3 p.m. in the Golda Meir Library, Ann Hanlon, Head, Digital Collections and Initiatives, UWM Libraries, and Marcy Bidney, Curator, American Geographical Society Library, present, “Discovering Wisconsin and the World in the Digital Public Library of America.”

From the College of Health Sciences
CHS will host a Research Forum this Friday from 12-1 p.m. in Enderis 127. Melissa Spadanuda, Associate Director, Compliance and IRB Manager will present, “Human Subjects Research at UWM,” focusing on the need for IRB review related to research, compliance issues with IRB, consequences of non-compliance, and support for IRB review.

Wisconsin Science Festival at UWM October 21-23
UWM is the featured host of the Wisconsin Science Festival in Milwaukee this coming weekend, October 21-23. UWM is offering 11 entertaining and interactive free public shows aimed at adult to high school audiences.  See the full schedule.

From the Career Planning and Resource Center
The UWM Exploring Majors Fair will take place on Monday, October 24 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. This event provides students with the opportunity to speak with faculty and advisers about all UWM majors, minors, and certificates in one centralized location.

– The Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Regional Research Forum presents, “Advancing the Health of Veterans through Collaboration in Research and Discovery,” on Monday, October 24 from 11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Milwaukee West located at 10499 West Innovation Drive in Wauwatosa. Registration.

– This is a reminder that the deadline for Research Growth Initiative applications is Monday, October 24 at 9 a.m

From the Japan Program
The Japan Program is pleased to welcome Dr. Nicholas Witkowski, University of Tokyo, for a talk on ascetic practice in Buddhism on Monday, October 24 at 2 p.m. in Greene Hall 148. The Japan Program will again be participating in the annual Milwaukee area Japan Fest on Sunday, November 6.

OSHER Distinguished Speaker Series

UWM Brand Day – 2016
The UWM Brand Oversight Committee is presenting the annual Brand Day on Thursday, October, 27 in the Alumni Fireside Lounge. Any member of the UWM community who prepares or supervises the preparation of UWM marketing or promotional materials is encouraged to attend one or all of the sessions. No registration is required.

From Women’s and Gender Studies
WGS Fall 2016 Brown Bag Series presents, “Dispossession by Administration,” given by Associate Professor Jodi Melamed of Marquette University on Friday, October 28 at 2:30 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library.

Call for Proposals
The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning invites UWM faculty, academic staff, and graduate teaching assistants to submit proposals for the UWM Teaching and Learning Symposium to be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017. Propose a session and register.

Leslie Whitaker Memorial Fund Award
The Department of English invites applications for the third round of the Leslie Whitaker Memorial Fund Award, which is designed to fund creative projects by Teaching Academic Staff members throughout UWM. For more information, contact Rachel Spilka at spilka@uwm.edu.
