Good morning, colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs:

Campus Budget Meeting

This Campus Budget Meeting is the 11th in a series and will be held in the Fireside Lounge (Student Union) from 1:15-2:15 p.m. Topics addressed included updates from the Chancellor, as well as the Budget Planning Task Force, CCOET, Governance groups, and the Budget Communication Task Force.

GOP Debate in Milwaukee

The Business Journal has a preview story on this coming week’s Republican Debate downtown.  550 journalists will watch the debate in the Panther Arena on our new scoreboard/video screen.

Kudos

– SARUP’s Community Design Solutions, under director Carolyn Esswein, and their partner HOME GR/OWN, City of Milwaukee, were selected as the winner in the Place by Design “Urban Strategy” category at the SXSW competition in Austin, Texas. Students who worked on the CDS team were: Gerri Witthuhn, Efrain Cano, Andrew Carlson, Anna Doran, Ryan Guetschow, Amber Piacentine, Ryan Shortridge, Frank Zimmerman, and Nick Zukauskas. Congratulations again to SARUP!

– African American Student Academic Services, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the College of Nursing tied for the title MOST SPIRITED OFFICE for the Friday, November 6 Black & Gold Spirit Day.  See pictures on the Spirit Days website. Congratulations to all three offices on their amazing UWM spirit!

– Andrew J. Petto, Biological Sciences and Kinesiology, will receive the 2015 Evolution Education Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers on November 14. Well done, Andrew!

The Week

Monday
I start the day with my weekly meeting with Robin Van Harpen, followed by a meeting with the College of Engineering and Applied Science, and the Chancellor’s Cabinet Meeting. In the afternoon, there’s a campus budget meeting and I meet with my staff. In the evening, I’ll attend a reception at the Chancellor’s residence.

Tuesday
In the morning, I have a Math Placement Test meeting, a meeting with Dean Shoho and the Chancellor, and a meeting of the CEMAT co-chairs with the Chancellor. In the afternoon, the Academic Leadership Council meets. Agenda items include a TeachLive demonstration, Office of Equity/Diversity Services overview, and a review of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Affordable Care Act.

Wednesday
I will be visiting the University of Chicago’s Chicago Innovation Exchange with the Chancellor, Sheldon and David Lubar, and a team of UWM faculty, administrators, and staff.

Thursday
In the morning, I have a monthly meeting with Ewa Barczyk, the Common System Review Group meeting via video conference (this is a System wide committee that I serve on), an informal meeting with the deans, and my monthly meeting with Dean Prasad. In the afternoon, I meet with Dean Peters, followed by a meeting with Dean Lundeen. In the evening, I’ll make opening remarks at the Korea Day Celebration in the Zelazo Center (see below), and will then give the welcome address at the 2015 AGSL Lecture.

Friday
I’ll be in Madison all day for the UW-System Provost Meeting. The final agenda is not yet available.

Veteran’s Week
– The UWM MAVRC, the SVA-UWM Chapter, and the Campus Activities Board at UWM will be offering our 3rd annual Veterans’ Week “Serving Those Who Served” Brunch on Wednesday, November 11 (Veterans’ Day) from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom East. Please join us as campus and community leaders serve brunch to our military and veteran students, faculty, and staff in recognition of their military service.

Native American Heritage Month
– President Obama has declared November 2015 as National Native American Heritage Month. 

Reminder – Textbook Adoptions Due Today!
– Representatives from eCampus.com will be available to meet with faculty and staff today from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. in the UWM Bookstore/Student Union to answer any questions and offer assistance. By submitting on-time textbook adoptions – UWM students will save a significant amount of money.

– International Education Week is International Education MONTH at UWM! The Center for International Education and other departments across campus will hold a variety of internationally-focused programming during November.

– IWA presents, “Understanding Muslims: Islamophobia and Turning Villains into Heroes,” on November 10 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the UWM Student Union, Wisconsin Room.

– Lynda.com provides 24/7 access to over 3,950 online technology tutorials. There will be an all-campus drop-in session Wednesday from 1-2 p.m. in Bolton 230 and a faculty hands-on training from noon-1 pm and again from 2-3 pm in Bolton 230.

Faculty Meeting with Fall 2015 Distinguished Lecture Speaker Eboo Patel
– Faculty members are invited to attend a meeting from 4-5 p.m. on Thursday, November 12 with Eboo Patel, founder of Interfaith Youth Core and the Fall 2015 Distinguished Lecture speaker. Later that evening, he will give a lecture entitled, “Bridges Between Us: The importance of Interfaith Dialogue and Leadership,” at 7 p.m. in the Union Wisconsin Room. The event is free and open to all.

Korea Day
– The UWM Korean community will host the 2015 KOREA DAY on Thursday, November 12 from 5-9:30 p.m. at the Helen Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts.

UWM Night with the Admirals
– Discounted lower-level tickets are available now for the Milwaukee Admirals’ November 21 game at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Tickets can be purchased online today, at: http://go.uwm.edu/uwm-admirals. For more information, contact Kevin O’Connor (kjoc@uwm.edu).

From the Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies
– A Town Called Brzostek: Film & Talkback with Simon Target, the director, on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Curtin 175. Talkback moderated by Neal Pease (UWM, Department of History).

– The Return: Film & Talkback with Adam Zucker, the director, next Monday 7 p.m. in the UWM Union Cinema. Talkback moderated by Neal Pease.

From the UWM Libraries
– UWM Libraries and CETL will host an open textbook review workshop as part of their Ed Tech funded project to bring open textbooks to UWM. $200 stipends will be awarded to faculty and teaching academic staff who review an open textbook for a current course. See

– Thursday at 1 p.m., the UWM Digital Humanities Lab will host a workshop on Omeka, a free, open-source publishing platform designed for scholars, librarians, and cultural enthusiasts and at 6pm Deirdre and David Stam will give a talk in the American Geographical Society Library on the extraordinary collection of Polar exploration materials they have donated to AGSL.

– Friday at 2 p.m., Kristopher Purzycki, Avery Edenfield, and Brad Houston will lead a discussion on, “Archiving Video Game Experience,” in the UWM Digital Humanities Lab.

UWM Panther Pride Blood Drive
– The College of Health Sciences will be sponsoring a UWM Panther Pride Blood Drive in the Union Ballroom on Tuesday, November 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in celebration of the CHS 40th anniversary. Appointments are recommended, but not required. We want to give back to our students, faculty, and staff in a campus-wide way and we also hope to positively impact the Milwaukee community!

The College of Health Sciences will also host a Health Screenings and Awareness event outside the Ballroom that will include engaging students, faculty, staff, and alumni in a variety of free screenings as well as health awareness information from many of the College of Health Sciences departments.

From the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS)
– CLACS will celebrate its 50th anniversary as a continuously funded Title VI National Resource Center on December 3 from 4-7 p.m. in the Zelazo Center (room 250). On December 4, CLACS hosts a follow-up workshop in which UWM and regional Latin Americanists will discuss challenges and opportunities to promote research, teaching, and public engagement on the Americas. Advance registration and more details.

UWM’s GIS Day Event
– On Wednesday, November 18, the UWM GIS Council has again planned a full day of activities at venues across campus. All sessions are free, but registration is appreciated.

Food Drive
– The Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research (CCBLLR) is coordinating the Campus-Wide Food Drive, taking place October 26 – December 1. To volunteer as a food collection box captain, email nmglaser@uwm.edu.
