November 23, 2015  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, colleagues. Here are this week’s brief (due to the Thanksgiving holiday) updates from Academic Affairs:

 Kudos

– Uk Heo, UWM Distinguished Professor of Political Science, received an award from the Korean Minister of Education for his book, South Korea’s Rise: Economic Development, Power, and Foreign Relations (Cambridge University Press, 2014), and research contributions to Korean studies. Professor Heo’s book was selected as one of the outstanding research products funded by the Korean government. This is a wonderful recognition, Uk. Congratulations!

– César Ferreira, Department of Spanish and Portuguese and affiliate of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, was elected to the Peruvian Academy of Language (Academia Peruana de la Lengua), an institution founded in the nineteenth century and charged with promoting Peruvian literature, linguistics, and culture. Professor Ferreira specializes in contemporary Peruvian letters and joins some 60 Peruvian academics in what is a lifetime appointment. Congratulations, César!

– The Institute of World Affairs has received a grant from the Longview Foundation to support its Global Achievement Instruction Network (GAIN) initiative. In 2013, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction established a Global Education Achievement Certificate for qualifying high school students. IWA’s GAIN project will assist schools in helping their students meet certificate criteria.

-The UWM School of Freshwater Sciences was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful (kgmb.org) IDEAL Innovation Award. The award is given for “Innovation by a for-profit or a not for-profit corporation in promoting and implementing creative and effective services that enhance our environment.” Well done, SFS!

– Diane Reddy, Psychology and Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, was interviewed by OnlineEducation.com. In addition, the U-Pace team (Diane Reddy, Ray Fleming, and Laura Pedrick) has won the Center for Digital Education’s Top 30 Technologists, Transformers, and Trailblazers award. Congratulations, Diane!

– The work of SARUP architecture students is highlighted in the Business Journal.
