Dear Colleagues:

In 2012, UWM signed an agreement to comply with the Executive Order 13607: “Establishing Principles of Excellence for Educational Institutions Serving Service Members, Veterans, Spouses and Other Family Members.” The Executive Order from former President Obama establishes additional steps for institutions to best serve this population.

The majority of the Principles of Excellence Agreement is administrative and operational, but there is an important part that requires faculty compliance. An institution must take additional steps to accommodate short absences (for less than 30 days) due to service obligations, provided that satisfactory academic progress is being made by the service members and reservists prior to suspending their studies.

Below is a list of typical short absences due to service obligations. Please note that the list is not all-inclusive.

  1. Extra-long weekend drill commitments, which are normally Saturday /Sundays but can include other days as well.
  2. Mandatory attendance at Service Schools for a student’s military job (assuming absence for attendance does not impact overall semester work or grade).
  3. Attendance for initial military training (boot camp) normally only if absence overlaps the start of a term or end of a semester.
