May 9, 2016  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs:

R1 Status Celebration Reminder
The celebration will take place in the Union Concourse (Ground Level) on Thursday, May 12 from 4:30 – 6 p.m. (remarks at 5:15 p.m.). RSVP here.

Kudos
– Aaron Buseh, Nursing, has been appointed to the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health. This is a wonderful recognition of Aaron’s contributions to science and congratulations are in order!

– Russell Fung (Physics, lead author) and Abbas Ourmazd (Physics, corresponding author) had their paper, “Dynamics from noisy data with extreme timing uncertainty,” appear in Nature on April 28, accompanied by a “News & Views” article. Media activities are led by Laura Otto in coordination with the Center for Free Electron Science, Hamburg; BioXFEL STC; the NSF; and the U.S. Dept. of Energy. There is also interest from the BBC. Well done!

– Kevin McLeod, Mathematical Sciences, was honored as the Wisconsin Mathematics Educator of the Year at the Wisconsin Math Council annual conference this past week in Green Lake. Congratulations, Kevin!

There is a deans meeting in the morning, followed by a CEMAT sponsors meeting. I’ll attend the University Committee meeting, provide opening remarks at the Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Tea and Farewell for Ewa Barczyk, and there is also an all-faculty meeting in the afternoon.

Wednesday
I have a UWM Research Foundation Board meeting, as well as regular meetings with Alan Shoho and UC Chair John Reisel. I have a space planning meeting and the Academic Leadership Council meets. We have a full agenda and items include an update on strategic enrollment management, the Wisconsin Science Festival, facilities planning and management, Alumni Relations update, data on MATC students who ultimately enter UWM graduate programs, and Panther Academic Welcome Day. I also plan to stop by at the Excellence Award Ceremony of the Accessibility Resource Center (see under announcements).

Thursday
The Budget Communication Task Force meets, followed by a conference call on the Student Success Collaborative, and a meeting on corporate partnerships. In the afternoon, there is the Faculty Senate meeting and the R1 campus celebration, which I encourage all to attend. Survey on Support Services
UWM’s Integrated Support Services project (including finance and accounting, procurement, human resources, and information technology support services) is seeking input from campus recipients of services. The Integrated Support Services (ISS) project team is currently gathering information from stakeholders across campus that will be compiled and analyzed in an assessment of the current state. The team invites UWM faculty and staff to share their perspective by completing the recipients of services survey. The survey’s focus is on current services/processes. Responses will provide valuable insight and help determine critical aspects of the future organizational service designs. The survey will remain open until Wednesday, May 11.

From the Accessibility Resource Center
Please join the Accessibility Resource Center staff and students this Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Union 240 as we honor the 2016 winners of the ARC Excellence Awards. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome!

From The UWM LGBT Resource Center
The 7th Annual UWM Lavender Graduation will be held this Thursday in the UWM Union Wisconsin Room at 7:30 p.m. (gathering at 7 p.m.). Each year the UWM LGBT Resource Center coordinates a Lavender Graduation ceremony to honor and celebrate students who identify with the LGBTQ+ communities. Students can register to participate here. Guest can RSVP here.

From the UWM Libraries
