Good Morning, Colleagues! Here is a summary of the week (which is the last week of classes):

Kudos

– Distinguished Professor Mark D. Schwartz, Geography, will give the Commencement Address at the Lyman Briggs College 2015 Commencement Ceremony. He will also receive a LBC Distinguished Alumni Award. LBC is the residential science college at Michigan State University. Well done, Mark!

– School of Freshwater Sciences Dean David Garman is the recipient of an Innovation in Academia award as part of the British Consulate’s Brit Week in Los Angeles. Congratulations, Dean Garman!

– Associate Professor Jasmine Alinder (History) and Associate Professor Elizabeth Drame (Exceptional Education) will be named as Community-Engaged Faculty of the Year at the Community Engagement and Leadership Awards on Tuesday, May 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Zelazo Center.

– Professor Marc Levine’s article, “Health Problems Take Root in a West Baltimore Neighborhood that is Sick of Neglect,” was published in the New York Times.

– Associate Professor Joyce M. Latham, Information Studies, has received a research support grant from the Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study of Harvard University.

– Winners for the ARC Excellence Awards 2015 are Professor Paul Lyman (Physics), Associate Professor Lindsay Timmerman (Communications), and Media Librarian Beth Traylor (Golda Meir Library). Thank you for all that you do to accommodate students!

– WUWM Radio has been recognized with two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971.

Budget Update

– There will be an all-campus budget meeting on Friday, May 8 at 9 a.m. in Bolton 150. Topic and streaming information will be announced later this week.

The Week:

Monday
I have several meetings with deans and direct reports, plus the Chancellor’s Cabinet, and the Chancellor and I continue our budget-update meetings: this time with the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. The CEMAT group meets in the afternoon to discuss online summer course promotion and high school dual enrollment.

Tuesday
Our next budget-update meeting is with the Division of Student Affairs, and I will attend the University Committee meeting in the afternoon. I also have a number of meetings with deans and direct reports. In the evening, I’m doing the welcome at the 2015 African American Graduation Reception. I also meet with Aurora in the afternoon to discuss our areas of collaboration.

Wednesday
More budget-update meetings, including one for the Graduate School and the Research Office. Along with other UWM colleagues, I’m attending the School of Information Studies year-end potluck, and in the afternoon, the DAWG data group meets. Agenda items include development of the data hub, needs assessment, and governance development. The Ombuds Council also meets.

Thursday
The day begins with an APBC meeting, followed by several meetings with deans and direct reports. The Chancellor and I are attending a School of Education all-school meeting. The Faculty Senate meets and I will attend. I’m also participating in the Phi Beta Kappa induction ceremony. In the evening, I’m stopping by the UWM Student Entrepreneur Celebration to recognize student leaders and exceptional innovators.

Friday
I’m attending the all-campus budget meeting, followed by a UW System Provosts teleconference. The Budget Planning Task Force meets and I’ll be attending the School of Education Research Gala as well as the College of Health Sciences Awards and Recognition ceremony.

Saturday
There are a number of campus wide events over the weekend – one is the Honors College graduation ceremony.

From the Center for Information Policy Research (CIPR)

– Professor Neil Richard discusses his new book, “Intellectual Privacy,” on Monday, May 4 at 6 p.m. in the Alumni Fireside Lounge. See http://cipr.uwm.edu/?p=529.

Maryland Avenue Hike-in/Bike-in Street Celebration

– UWM will have its first Open Streets event on Thursday, May 7 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. when Maryland Avenue will be closed and turned into a plaza for the day. There will be food trucks, bike demonstrations, and a flurry of informal activity.

Accessibility Resource Center Excellence Awards

– The Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) will honor the 2015 winners of the ARC Excellence Awards and all of the ARC Valued Volunteers on Friday, May 8 at 1 p.m. in Union 345. All are welcome.

Outstanding Woman of Color and P.D. Poorman Outstanding Achievement on Behalf of LGBTQ
– The Division of Global Inclusion and Engagement is currently accepting nominations for the UW System Outstanding Women of Color in Education Awards and the Dr. P.B. Poorman Award for Outstanding Achievement on Behalf of LGBTQ People. For more information see http://www5.uwm.edu/news/?p=18210. Nominations must be submitted electronically to Associate Vice Chancellor Cheryl Ajirotutu at yinka@uwm.edu by 4:30 p.m. on May 29.

CETL Summer Workshops

– CETL is offering summer workshops for adapting your courses to active learning and active learning spaces on June 12 and 25 from 12-4 p.m. in NWQ ALC 1975. Register at http://ltcworkshops.org.

– Office 365 Tip of the Week: Do you find yourself typing in the same list of names when sending an email? Create a Contact List to save yourself some time! Find instructions on the UWM Knowledge Base for the Outlook Web App (https://kb.uwm.edu/page.php?id=29855#_Toc349310080) and the Outlook desktop client (https://kb.uwm.edu/page.php?id=31474). Once you create a Contact List, you can use it to send email or invite the list to a calendar event.

Other

– The Red Cross is organizing disaster relief for those affected by the earthquake in Nepal. See Nepal Relief.

– Wednesday is National Teacher Appreciation Day, and it’s also Privacy Week.
