June 29, 2015  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update:

Leadership announcements

As of July 1, there will be some leadership changes in Academic Affairs.

Lubar School of Business Dean Tim Smunt has decided, after 6 years of deanship, to return to the faculty. Dr. Kanti Prasad has agreed to take on the role of the dean of the school. Kanti was the dean of the Lubar School of Business from 2002 to 2009. I want to thank Tim for his leadership in the school and also for his service to the campus – in particular, the role that he played in the campus-wide budget discussions. In the same vein, I want to welcome Kanti back into the leadership team and I am looking forward to working with him. Read the media release.

The College of Health Sciences was unfortunately not successful in the recruitment of a permanent dean. After consultation with the CHS, I have appointed Dr. Ron Cisler as the interim dean. Dr. Cisler is a full professor in the Department of Health Informatics and Administration in the College and is also the director of the Center for Urban Population Health. Thank you for your willingness to serve in this position, Ron.

Dr. Paula Rhyner will take over the leadership of the School of Continuing Education after Dr. Sam White has requested not to continue in the leadership role for personal reasons. Since the school is no longer an “academic school,” it cannot have a dean as its head. Paula’s title will therefore be Deputy to the Provost for Continuing Education and Outreach. (Due to the current budget constraints, this will be a 50% appointment.) Sam, I want to thank you for your dedicated and strong leadership in the school over the last two and a half years; and Paula, I am grateful for your willingness to take on this new role on campus. Thank you also for your leadership in the College of Health Sciences this past year.

I am currently in discussion with the Zilber School of Public Health on the appointment of an interim dean following the announcement by Dean Peck of her departure from UWM by the end of June. In the mean time, Dr. Ron Perez will continue to lead the School.
