July 11, 2016  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, Colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

Congratulations to Vickie Moerchen, Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology (IHCP), who has been awarded funding by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Maternal and Child Health in the amount of $784,984 over five years. The program proposal titled, “UW-Milwaukee MCH Interdisciplinary/Interprofessional Pipeline Training Program,” addresses the critical shortage of students from underrepresented groups to serve children and families from underserved populations, through academic support, specialized training, and preparation for graduate school. Congratulations, Vickie!

Kari Whittenberger-Keith, PhD, Proposal Development Manager in the Office of Sponsored Programs, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (http://www.nordp.org/). Congratulations, Kari!

– Enrique Figueroa will be recognized as the UMOS Corporate Citizen of the Year at its annual corporation luncheon on July 29. UMOS is a non-profit advocacy organization that provides programs and services to improve the employment, educational, health, and housing opportunities of under-served populations. This is a great recognition of your contributions to UMOS, Enrique.

Patricia Torres Najera, Electa Quinney Institute and doctoral student in Urban Studies, is featured in a Journal-Sentinel article. Patricia is an advocate for Milwaukee and a community activist. Congratulations, Patricia!

The number of faculty and staff who have completed time and effort reporting for their sponsored projects has more than doubled over the past year. More than 85% of all time and effort statements since 2007 have now been certified. This is important because time and effort reporting is required per UWM policy and federal regulation. Thank you to all who have completed this requirement. Special thanks to the Effort Coordinators – administrators who help faculty and staff to complete time and effort reporting – for this achievement. Keep up the great work! Please contact the Office of Research (or-osp-effortreporting@uwm.edu) if you have questions about completing your time and effort reporting.

From the Accessibility Resource Center

Starting July 1, the Accessibility Resource Center will be coordinating sign language interpreting and captioning services for all campus departments. While ARC has always provided this service, we are now taking it one step further and will be contracting with agencies directly for you! This will assist with centralizing services and improving control of quality and cost. All billing associated with these services will be done internally, without the need for a separate direct services charge. All campus offices and departments are asked to contact ARC for interpreting and captioning service needs. Please take a look at our new online form for requests and also read the centralization committee report.

For additional questions, please contact Interim Assistant Director Cassie Franklin at cassief@uwm.edu or 414-894-7044. We look forward to continuing to assist you in providing equal access at UWM for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
