Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

John Berges, Biological Sciences and Freshwater Sciences, has become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, the United Kingdom’s professional institution promoting excellence in higher education, which advocates evidence-based teaching methods and is responsible for the UK Professional Standards Framework for higher education practitioners. Well done, John – this is a well-deserved honor and we are proud of you!

Sue Stalewski, Biomedical Sciences and Office of the Dean, was highlighted on the Flexible Option website to promote the College’s new Flexible option offering: the Bachelors in Biomedical Sciences: Health Sciences. Kudos to Sue and to the college’s faculty and staff for their innovative work!

Adel Nasiri, Electrical Engineering, was appointed interim Connected Systems Institute (CSI) Executive Director effective November 1, 2017. CSI will focus on the industrial internet of things (IIoT), which uses sensors to gather data from equipment, machines, and manufactured products through secure data networks. Congratulations, Adel!

Panther News

There will be a UWM Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership (WWHEL) Networking Event at the Milwaukee women’s Basketball game vs. Wright State on Thursday, February 1 at the Klotsche Arena. 6 p.m. Reception, 7 p.m. Tip-off, and Four Free Tickets for WWHEL members. RSVP Required.

The Milwaukee women’s basketball team hosted another successful “School Day” game on January 11, posting a comeback win over Cleveland State. Special thanks to all involved from across campus. Check out the recap, photo gallery, and more!

The Week

Tuesday

A day of meetings: Tom Luljak, Brian Thompson, the Chancellor and Alan Shoho, John Reisel, Peter Sands, the Student Association leadership team, Michael Doylen, and Mark Harris. The Academic Leadership Council meets. Agenda items include the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for LGBTQ+ Advocacy-Focused Training and the UW Two-Year Colleges update and discussion.

Wednesday

Today begins with a breakfast meeting with L&S dean candidate Dana Heller. I’m attending part of a College of Letters and Science leadership retreat, I have a provosts’ videoconference on the restructuring of UW-Colleges and UW-Extension, I have a meeting on early college credit, and meetings with Alan Shoho, Trudy Turner, Kim Litwack, and the Chancellor.

Thursday

This week I continue my all-school/college meetings to discuss our strategic initiatives (Outstanding Learning Environment, Excellence in Research, and Leaders in Community Engagement) as outlined by the Chancellor. Today, I’m meeting with the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. I have meetings with Katie Miota, Stan Stojkovic, Ron Cisler and Jay Kapellusch, and a campus space planning meeting. I also have my wrap-up meeting with L&S dean candidate Dana Heller.

Friday

I continue my meetings with the schools and colleges to discuss our strategic initiatives. The schools I meet with today are the Peck School of the Arts and the College of Letters and Science (by division).

Announcements

Tuesday Mindfulness Meditation Break
Join faculty, staff, and students for 30 minutes of mindfulness meditation. Listen to recordings of reflections on mindfulness topics and practice guided meditations. Sessions will be held each Tuesday from 12:15 (prompt) to 12:45 p.m. in Union 179 from January 30 until May 8. Contact Paul Dupont at 229-2927 or pdupont@uwm.edu for more details.

Pulitzer-Prize-Winning Author on Campus

Colson Whitehead will be speaking on January 31 at 7 p.m. in the UWM Student Union. Tickets include a signed copy of his New York Times best seller, The Underground Railroad. $13 students, $16 faculty/staff.

Alumni Employee Awards

Wednesday is the deadline to recognize stellar alumni employee colleagues! The Call for Nominations for the 2018 Alumni Employee Awards closes January 31. All nominees will be recognized at the Alumni Employee Awards and Appreciation Lunch on Wednesday, March 28.

Multicultural Winter Welcome

New and returning students are invited to the Multicultural Network’s Winter Welcome in Bolton Hall’s first floor on Tuesday, February 6 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Check out all the ways we can help you succeed! Beverages and snacks in multiple offices – the more you visit, the more chances to win!

WGS Vilas Trust Lecture
Against the Evils of Democracy: Fighting Drug Wars and Femicide in Mexico and the Americas,” will be presented by Melissa W. FLAS Fellowships

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies awards Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for the study of Portuguese and other less commonly taught languages of the Americas. Both undergraduate AY and graduate summer fellowships are available. Application deadline: February 15, 2018.

Salary Negotiation Training 

WWHEL and UWM’s certified AAUW Work Smart trainers are teaming up to provide salary negotiation training from 2 to 4 p.m. on February 22 in the Golda Meir 4th Floor Conference Center. Up to 40 university women can be accommodated for this session. Fellowships

UW-Madison’s Institute for Research in the Humanities has issued a call for applications for fellowship appointments for the 2018-2019 academic year. The Institute offers up to four fellowships each year to faculty at University of Wisconsin System campuses. Fellowships may be for one or two semesters and may continue through the summer on a non-stipendiary basis. The deadline to apply is March 1. Application information and form are available online. Roger Federer won his 20th Grand Slam victory last Sunday by defeating Marin Čilić in the Australian Open. An amazing record!
