Strategic Opportunities Work Group
Just a reminder that the Chancellor invites you all to provide feedback on the Chancellor’s Strategic Opportunities Work Group (CSOWG) draft document.
Kudos
– Jeffrey Karron, Biology, is lead PI on a three-year National Science Foundation Evolutionary Ecology collaborative grant that combines the expertise of ecologists, geneticists, botanists, and theoreticians from the U.S. and France. The total award for this innovative project in plant reproductive biology is $931,255 and the UWM award is $386,631. Excellent news, Jeffrey!
– UWM’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) has received a 2017 Online Learning Consortium Effective Practice Award for their initiative, “Increasing Online Learning Success Using a Learning Analytics Tool with Messaging about How to Study Productively.” Congratulations to Diane Reddy, Dylan Barth, and Ray Fleming for their leadership on this project!
– Marcus Filippello, History, recently had his book, The Nature of the Path: Reading a West African Road, published by the University of Minnesota Press. Congratulations, Marcus!

– Karyn Frick, Psychology, was one of five panelists in an event held at Discovery World by Milwaukee PBS after their advanced screening of the new documentary, “Alzheimer’s: Every Minute Counts.” The panel discussion was led by Joanne Williams, host of Milwaukee PBS’s show Black Nouveau, and featured speakers including Dr. Frick, Alzheimer’s Association Executive Director Tom Hlavacek, and former Wisconsin Governor Martin Schreiber.
The Week
Monday
I meet with Robin Van Harpen and will attend a CEMAT Co-Chairs meeting. There is a meeting of the Chancellor’s Committee for Hispanic Serving Initiatives (CCHSI), I meet with UC Chair John Reisel, the Chancellor’s Cabinet meets, and I meet with Jim Hill.
Tuesday
There is a dean’s morning meeting, I have meetings with Alan Shoho, Brett Peters, Joely Urdan, and I’m attending part of the Academic Staff Senate meeting. I also meet with Tom Luljak and the Chancellor to discuss federal relations planning.
Wednesday
I start the day with a breakfast meeting with ZSPH dean candidate Mark L. Williams. I have meetings with Ron Perez, Paula Rhyner, and Marija Gajdardziska-Josifovska. There is a meeting on the campus budget, and I have my weekly meeting with the Chancellor.
Thursday
I have a UWM Libraries budget meeting, I meet with Colleen Galambos, a finalist for the Bader endowed chair, I’m attending a meeting of the Electa Quinney Endowment Advisory Board, I have lunch with UW System AVP Stephen Kolison, and I’m attending the Faculty Senate meeting. The day ends with a wrap-up meeting with ZSPH dean candidate Mark L. Williams.

College of Health Sciences Research Forum will take place on Friday, February 17 from 12-1 p.m. in Enderis 109. The topic is “The Sustainability Challenge: Designing Your Project for Success Beyond the Grant.”
UWM will be launching Guide, a student-centered mobile app, for summer 2017. The product demo takes place Wednesday, February 22 at 1:30 p.m. in Sandburg Flicks. All are welcome to attend.
