February 1, 2016  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs.

Honorary Doctoral Degree

The former French Minister of Justice, Christiane Taubira, received an honorary Doctor of Laws and Human Rights degree at a very special ceremony on Saturday in the library. (She resigned this week from her post in protest to a proposed anti-terrorism law.) Many thanks to Dr. Sarah Cordova, French, Italian, and Comparative Literature, and her colleagues for making this happen.

Kudos

– Sherri Sieff, CSD Speech and Language Clinic Director, who was recently announced as the recipient of a 2015 WSHA Lifetime Achievement Award. The WSHA Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual for years of professional service to the field of communication disorders. Congratulations, Sherri!

– Caitlin Croegaert, Clinical Assistant Professor, who was recently announced as a recipient of the WSHA NSSLHA Mentor Award! The Mentor Award is given to an individual who serves as an exceptional example for students. Well done, Caitlin!

– Michael Mikoś, Professor and Chair, Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, whose paper, “Rise and Fall of the Adam Mickiewicz Chair at Columbia University in New York (1948-1954),” is being published in Cracow, Poland. Congratulations, Michael!

– WUWM, which was recognized by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, for their work with Precious Lives and Project Milwaukee.

From the Library

– I am pleased to announce that this coming June, after Ewa Barczyk retires as Associate Provost and Director of Libraries, Michael Doylen will assume interim responsibilities. Michael has served as the Assistant Director of Archives, Music, and Special Collections since 2012. He joined the Libraries in 2003 as Head of Archives. He also served as Interim Assistant Director of User Services from 2010-2012. Michael is an active member of the archives profession, having served in leadership roles in both the Midwest Archives Conference and the Society of American Archivists. Michael, I am looking forward to working with you; and Ewa, we will thank you in a very appropriate manner later in the semester!
