August 8, 2016  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good afternoon, Colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

– A planning committee made up of UWM faculty from across the humanities, including administrative staff, graduate students, and community members, and led by Associate Professors of English Jason Puskar and Dave Clark, received a Next Generation Challenge Planning Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for 2016-17. The grant will fund a year of planning to improve career diversity for doctoral students across the humanities. UWM was one of only 25 universities to receive the award. Congratulations!

– Congratulation also to Christine Evans (History Department) on her new book titled, “Between Truth and Time – A History of Soviet Central Television,” (Yale University Press).

The Week

Monday

There is a campus budget planning meeting that I will attend Monday morning followed by the Chancellor’s Cabinet meeting. CEMAT (Chancellor’s Enrollment Management Action Team) meets in the afternoon and the agenda items include a review of fall 2016 enrollment; our Strategic Enrollment Management Plan update; the finalized agenda for the CEMAT Retreat; campus-wide scholarship management; and a discussion on the preliminary results of CEMAT Scholarship Funds for 2016-17 and available funds for 2017-18.

Tuesday

There is a deans’ morning meeting, followed by my weekly meeting with the Chancellor, a monthly meeting with Dean Scott Emmons, and I’m attending part of the Academic Staff Senate meeting in the afternoon.

Wednesday

Wednesday I continue my one-on-one meetings with the deans (Kim Litwack from Nursing and Val Klump from SFS) discussing their respective strategic goals and priorities for 2015-16. There is a meeting on a UW-Colleges proposal on collaboration and a discussion on Commencement in the Chancellor’s Office.

Thursday

I’m attending the Academic Planning and Budget Committee meeting, making brief remarks at a farewell luncheon for student interns from the National Taiwan Normal University, and meeting with Michael Doylen (UWM Libraries) on goals and priorities for 2016- 17. I also have regular monthly meetings with Maria Gajdardziska-Josifovska (Graduate School) and Ron Cisler (CHS).

Friday

Fewer meetings on this Friday, which will mostly be occupied by admin.

UNITE (University-Neighborhood Initiative To Engage) Promo Items Needed
External Relations is seeking promotional items and flyers for UNITE. UNITE is an educational opportunity during Fall Welcome where UWM faculty, staff, and students volunteer to take welcome bags to students living in the neighborhood around UWM prior to the academic year. Welcome bags can include promotional items from your department or unit, program advertisements, a calendar of events, important UWM information, and swag. 1500 items need to be delivered to Chapman 180B by August 19 to be included. This year, UNITE will take place on August 25. Volunteer to deliver welcome bags! Please contact Keri Duce at klduce@uwm.edu with any questions.

From University Relations

A redesigned UWM.edu Home page and Research page will be previewed at a campus open session on Thursday, August 11 from 11 a.m. – Noon in the Chapman Hall Regents Room. Learn more about the objective of the redesign initiative and RSVP.

From Alumni Relations

Join us for free doughnuts and coffee Thursday, August 18 to learn more about Black & Gold Spirit Days at our Black & Gold Spirit Days Kickoff Breakfast. Find out what Spirit Days are all about and how you can participate in the spirited fun. Sign up for the breakfast.

From the Office of Equity/Diversity Services

A Title IX training session, open to all campus employees, staff, and students, will be held on August 10 from 1-2:30 p.m. in Library Room E281. The session will address issues such as sex-based discrimination and harassment. Please register.

UWM Kenwood Inn Closure
After careful deliberation and review, the Kenwood Inn, a lunch-only delicatessen on the third floor of the UWM Student Union will not be re-opening for the 2016-2017 academic year. The closure was a necessary decision as Retail Services administration continues their focus on returning the best food value to our campus while maximizing the value of their professional and student staff.

Record High Listening Levels for WUWM Radio

During the week of July 7-13, the headlines were dominated by stories of police shootings in Minneapolis and Dallas, which followed a police shooting in Baton Rouge. The presidential campaigns were also in full force. WUWM’s market share increased to 2.9%, setting a new record. The average listener tuned in for 6 hours that week…also a record. About 100,000 listeners tuned to WUWM that week which is slightly above the station’s weekly average.

UBR Changes in Chapman Hall

As you might know, Joey Zafa (UBR in both the Provost’s Office/Academic Affairs and in the GEA units [Alumni Relations, Chancellor’s Office, Development, Global Inclusion and Engagement, Secretary of the University’s Office, and University Communications and Media Relations]) found another opportunity in San Francisco. I personally want to thank him for his years of dedication, trust, and hard work. As an interim arrangement, Suzanne Abler has agreed to split her time between the Zilber School of Public Health and the Provost’s Office. Paul Klajbor (UBR for the College of Engineering and Applied Science) has likewise agreed on the same terms to help out in the GEA offices.

Take care,

Johannes
