August 15, 2016  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, Colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

Professor Iris Xie (School of Information Studies) and her co-author, Krystyna Matusiak (University of Denver), recently published a book titled, “Discover Digital Libraries: Theory and Practice.” (Publisher: Elsevier). Congratulations, Iris!

Professor Sandra McLellan (School of Freshwater Sciences) and Steven Corsi (Wisconsin Water Science Center) received a 104g grant from the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the National Institutes for Water Resources in the amount of $240,000. Their proposal, “Detection of Sewage Contamination in Urban Areas of Great Lakes,” was the top-ranked proposal in the country. Well done again, Sandra!

The Week

Monday

The CEMAT Sponsor Group meets (at this meeting we set the agenda for the next CEMAT meeting), followed by my monthly meeting with Dean Stan Stojkovic, and the Chancellor’s Cabinet meeting. In the afternoon, I meet with Mark Harris, Dean Rodney Swain, and have my weekly staff meeting. I will also attend a dinner with INTO group. (INTO University Partnerships Limited (INTO) is a global education partnering organization head-quartered in Brighton, United Kingdom.)

Tuesday

The Course Duplication committee meets in the morning and will receive their charge from me. This committee, which is co-chaired by Hobart Davies and Dev Venugopalan, will have as its main focus the evaluation and subsequent limitation and/or elimination of course duplication on campus. There is also a meeting on the Lubar Entrepreneurship Center, followed by my monthly meeting with Joely Urdan, and my weekly meeting with the Chancellor. In the afternoon, I will attend a lengthy meeting regarding INTO/UWM Partnership Planning in support of our international student recruitment efforts.

Wednesday

The morning will be occupied by the CEMAT Summer Retreat – agenda items include Leveraging the Enrollment Management Core for Success; Updates on Initiatives (Enrollment Management Plan, Investing in Advising, Retention Initiatives, and Financial Aid and Scholarships); and a group discussion on national and campus initiatives. There will be close to a hundred attendees. I leave for Madison late morning to attend a System-wide Provost meeting.

The Board of Regents meeting takes place in Madison. View the Agenda.

Friday

I meet with the Chancellor’s Committee for Hispanic-Serving Initiatives Steering Committee, followed by meetings with direct reports. I’ll also attend part of the Associate Deans’ Retreat in the afternoon.

Announcements

From UWM Libraries

– Over 120,000 objects from the UWM Libraries Digital Collections became available this month through the Digital Public Library of America, as part of the DPLA Wisconsin Service Hub. The project was the culmination of three years of work to fund, organize, and launch Wisconsin’s Hub. UWM is a major contributor of content and a founding governing partner, and several UWM Libraries staff contributed to the project, including Ann Hanlon, Digital Collections & Initiatives Head, who served as chair of the Governing Board during its inaugural year, 2015-16. More information.

– A reception for “Druck und Verlag von George Brumder: An Exhibit of Milwaukee German-Language Publishing” will be held this Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. in Special Collections, fourth floor, UWM Golda Meir Library. There will be a gallery talk at 6 p.m.

UNITE (University-Neighborhood Initiative To Engage) Promo Items Needed
External Relations is seeking promotional items and flyers for UNITE. UNITE is an educational opportunity during Fall Welcome where UWM faculty, staff, and students volunteer to take welcome bags to students living in the neighborhood around UWM prior to the academic year. Welcome bags can include promotional items from your department or unit, program advertisements, a calendar of events, important UWM information, and swag. 1500 items need to be delivered to Chapman 180B by August 19 to be included. This year, UNITE will take place on August 25. Volunteer to deliver welcome bags! Please contact Keri Duce at klduce@uwm.edu with any questions.

Watching again the Olympic athletes last night (in particular Usain Bolt, Wayde van Niekerk and Simone Biles) was amazing!

An interesting fact: The USA is technically still the defending Olympic rugby champion having won the gold medal in 1924 (the final was against France). It was the last time that the 15-player version of this game was played at the Olympics.

Take care,

Johannes
