21st Century Voices: Synthesized Speech in the Third Millennium

This project was funded by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s (UWM) Center for 21st Century Studies. Dr. Shelley Lund, director of the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Lab collaborated with Dr. Pat Mayes (English), Dr. Yi Hu (Electrical Engineering), and Dr. Heather Warren Crow (Interdisciplinary Arts, Texas Tech University). The goals of the project were:

  • Explore how individuals who use AAC use synthetic speech to express their identities
  • Explore the aesthetics of synthesized speech
  • Develop improved synthetic voices
  • Develop a sound-based art performance using synthetic voices
